The key things about co-housing schemes are that

  • members have their own apartments,
  • there are many shared facilities
  • there is a co-operative philosophy, and they are usually registered co-operatives
  • members are expected to contribute some effort to the shared facilities and activities
  • there is a much increased level of mutual support compared to “normal life”.
  • our particular idea is to aim for the highest level of "green" construction

The shared facilities probably include a kitchen and lounge, but can extend to gardens, workshop, art studio, guest rooms, meditation room, E-car share, etc.

Generally there is an initial design process where the initial group of members decide firstly how much shared space they can afford, and what they want to use it for. The members manage the scheme themselves, and obviously the shared spaces usage can be changed, or adapted to new circumstances
